PASI Eyes More Olympic Spots

Indonesian Olympic News Update   13 Apr 2021

Indonesia has booked a berth in an athletics event for Tokyo Games, but the Indonesian Athletics Federation (PASI) aims for more spots.

Lalu Muhammad Zohri has qualified for Tokyo Games in 100m men's event after clocking 10.03 seconds in Seiko Golden Grand Prix in May 2019 and passed 10.05 seconds of Tokyo Games entry standards set by the world athletics governing body, IAAF.

PASI aims for a spot in the 100m hurdles women event and long jump men event, as Coach Eni Nuraeni said.

"In 100m hurdles, we've been preparing Emilia Nova while Sapwaturrahman will try his best in the long jump event. There will be a competition in Kazhakstan at the end of May, and they will compete along with Zohri," she said.

Emilia is the 2018 Asian Games silver medalist and the 2019 SEA Games gold medalist. She clocked 13.31 seconds in the 2018 Asian Games, and she needs to shred more than half a second to pass the 12.84 seconds mark to qualify for Tokyo Games.

Sapwaturrahman took the bronze medal in the 2018 Asian Games after jumping 8.09 meters. He needs to jump a little further to pass the 8.22 meters of Tokyo Games entry standards.

The athletics camp is also hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic as it has prevented the athletes from having proper training and competition. Eni said they had to be creative to keep the athletes in good shape.

"We're sticking to our training program. The pandemic has prevented us from having real competition. Thus, we organized an internal competition by inviting the Jakarta athletics team. Zohri is in good condition, around 85-90 per cent," Eni concluded.
