Indonesian Olympic News Update 26 Feb 2021
Indonesia is still in contention to host the 2032 Olympic Games after the Future Host Commission for the Games of the Olympiad sent a letter to the Indonesian Olympic Committee, recommending Indonesia to continue its dialogue with the International Olympic Committee.
President of the Indonesian Olympic Committee, Raja Sapta Oktohari, said he's grateful with the letter from the commission as it means Indonesia has yet to knock out from the competition.
"We received the letter from the Future Host Commission for the Games of the Olympiad on Wednesday, and the commission chairwomen, Kristin Kloster Aasen highlighted a number of opportunities and challenges in our proposal," said Okto.
"We're glad that Indonesia is invited for the continuous dialogue phase with the IOC. We will prepare all things needed to continue the bidding process to host the 2032 Olympic Games."
In the letter, Aasen highlighted several opportunities in the proposal presented by Indonesia. Among others are the vision to align the Games with the rejuvenation of Jakarta and the goal to make the city one of the most liveable and sustainable cities in the world, strong support from the government and the Governor of Jakarta, and the usage of existing venues from the Asian Games 2018 and existing accommodation inventory.
Despite IOC's decision to open a targeted dialogue with Brisbane and the Australian Olympic Committee, IOC President, Thomas Bach, stated that everything is not final yet. Brisbane is invited for targeted dialogue as the city submitted its proposal earlier than its competitors.
Okto took an analogy of car racing, saying that the bidding process is similar to the Nascar race.
"Imagine the 500-lap Nascar race, and we're in five laps. Brisbane is in the first place, while Indonesia is right behind it. Anything can happen in the race. If something happens with Brisbane, it has to go to the pit and return to the back of the pack," he said.
He added that Indonesia could win the bid with the cooperation from all stakeholders as the country has all variables needed, such as economic growth and young population. They will also develop from the 2018 Asian Games and Asian Para Games success.
"These conditions give more boost to the Indonesian Olympic Committee to take all opportunities available to host the 2032 Olympic Games as Indonesia has to be the winning nation," said Okto.
